description 1,045,006. Shielding magnetic heads. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 22, 1965 [Feb. 25, 1964], No. 7545/65. Heading G5R. To reduce pick-up at the read gap 10 of a write/read head due to the field from the record gap 7, a plate 16, of magnetizable poor conductor, preferably ferrite, is arranged asymmetrically with respect to the centre distance between the gaps 7, 10 on the opposite side of a magnetic tape (not shown) from the gaps and preferably some 0À1 to 0À5 mm. away from them. The member is adjusted such that any field due to the gap 7 at the gap 10 is in a vertical direction as drawn. The member 16 may be inclined to the tapepath, Fig. 3, and may be associated with a non-magnetic conductor 17 which also reduces adjacent-track cross-talk in a multiple-track assembly (Fig. 1, not shown). A number of possible positions for the member 16 are given (Figs. 2b, 2c, 2d, not shown).
