description In a modification of the process claimed in Claim 1 of the parent Specification, a water-soluble polyamine containing polyalkylene oxide residues and obtained by condensation of mono- and/or poly-halohydrin ethers of compounds containing polyalkylene oxides or polyalkylene oxide groups with ammonia or a salt thereof or mixture of ammonia or a salt thereof with polyamines is reacted with a bifunctional compound containing at least one epoxide and/or a -halo-b -hydroxy alkyl group in the molecule, the resultant polycondensate being stabilized by acidification. In an embodiment of the invention, a polyalkylene oxide derivative containing more than one a -halo-b -hydroxy alkyl group in the molecule, e.g. polyalkylene oxide chlorhydrin ethers or chlorhydrin ethers of alkoxylated polyhydric alcohols is reacted with aqueous ammonia or a mixture of ammonia and polyamines. In the Examples:- (1) to (3) and (6) a bis-chlorhydrin ether of polyethylene oxide is reacted with ammonia, the product of (1) being reacted with epichlorhydrin; (4) the tris-chlorhydrin ether of glycerol is reacted with ammonia; (5) a bis-chlorhydrin ether of polyethylene oxide is reacted with ammonia and dipropylene triamine, (7) a mixture of the bis- and mono-chlorhydrin ethers of polyethylene oxide is reacted with a mixture of ammonia and dipropylene triamine and (8) and (9) a bis-chlorhydrin ether of polyethylene oxide is reacted with a mixture of ammonia and ethylene diamine, the product of (9) being further reacted with a bis-chlorhydrin ether of polyethylene oxide.
