description 742,830. Repeater housings. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Dec. 4, 1953 [Jan. 20, 1953], No. 33792/53. Divided out of 742,801. Class 38 (1). A submersible housing 2 for apparatus associated with a submarine cable comprises a bulkhead 6 which closes the apparatus chamber 4, is subjected on its outer side 5 to hydrostatic pressure and has a small freedom of movement under said pressure so as to be pressed against a shoulder in the housing, and an annulus 11 of relatively soft metal which flows under said pressure and forms an antidiffusion seal between the bulkhead and the housing. The annulus 11 may lie in a plane substantially perpendicular to the axis of the housing, or between conical surfaces which make an angle with said axis which does not exceed the angle of friction for the contacting materials. A peripheral groove 18 may be provided in bulkhead 6 in which a resilient deformable ring 17 is inserted which is deformed to make a water-tight seal when the bulkhead is pressed into position. Specification 742,801 is referred to.
