The apparatus is configured, based on image data from a camera of the vehicle, to recognize a number of objects in an environment of the light signal transmitter arranged in front of the vehicle in the direction of travel, and to assign at least one object from the number of objects to the signal transmitter. The apparatus is further configured to determine an individual estimated value of the distance of the at least one assigned object from the vehicle, and to determine the estimated value of the distance of the light signal transmitter based on the individual estimated value of the distance of the at least one assigned object from the vehicle.
