description Methods, devices, systems, and non-transitory process-readable storage media include methods for preventing IPv6 address exhaustion in prefix delegation mode by a software-enabled access point ("softAP") mobile computing device providing an Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) wide area network (WAN) connection to a plurality of client devices. A processor of a softAP mobile computing device may include assigning an unassigned prefix of a pool of available prefixes to a client device connected to a local area network (LAN) established by the softAP mobile computing device. The processor may determine whether the client device is disconnected from the LAN based on receiving an indication that the client device has disconnected. The processor may perform a cache look-up to obtain a link-local address of the client device when the client device is disconnected from the LAN, and unassign the prefix associated with the link-local address of the client device.
