Zusammenfassung:	The invention relates to a process for reducing infiltrating air, which is aspirated through gaps which, during sintering of a raw material mixture having a moisture content of 4.5-8% and consisting essentially of ore and fuel, arise during the sintering process along the lateral boundary of the loose material. In order to avoid the disadvantages described and to improve the sealing of the said gap by simple means, requiring low maintenance, without interfering with the sintering process, it is proposed that ignition of the fuel constituents of the raw material mixture is suppressed in the region of the surface edges during the ignition phase and, if appropriate, the heat treatment phase, but the moisture in the unignited edge region is predominantly expelled by heat introduced from the ignition flame or by heat originating from the combustion of the carbon in the ignited raw material mixture, and the resulting dry flowable raw material mixture is utilised for filling the gap.
