description | 1327760 Electrodes; coating with platinum group metals IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 4 Dec 1970 [22 Dec 1969] 62332/69 Headings C7B and C7F [Also in Division B2] An electrode, e.g. for chlor-alkali or per salt electrolysis, electro-plating or cathodic protection, comprises a base having at least its surface of Ti, Ta, Nb or Zr, one or more layers of an oxide of Ti, Ta, Nb or Zr formed electrolytically or by chemical decomposition from a solution of the metal ions, and one or more layers of a Pt group metal or oxide thereof. The Pt group metal e. g. 70/30 Pt-Ir, Ru, Ru-Ir or Ir may be applied by thermal decomposition of a painted coating e.g. a chloride and it may be subsequently heated in oxygen. The substrate may be first etched in oxalic acid, and the resultant solution may be used for depositing the oxide coating. In an example of the electrolytic formation of titanium oxide an etched Ti base is supplied with a positive potential of 12 volts with respect to a lead cathode immersed in a 7wt. per cent H 2 SO 4 solution containing 5g/l of Ti and maintained at 90C. |
