Tuning specimen with calibrated defect which size is an order and more larger than wave length of excited ultrasonic oscillations is scanned by ultrasonic converter before inspection of article. Amplitudes of received signals and value of displacement of converter corresponding to them are recorded, threshold level of amplitude of received signal is found and amplitudes and distances between positions of ultrasonic converter of inspected article and specimen are compared. If signal amplitude reaches maximum value defect is classified as extended and its sizes are determined as distance between positions of converter at which signal amplitude equals threshold value. If amplitude of signal from defect does not reach maximum value defect is classified as local one and its size is determined as distance between positions of converter at which signal amplitude during tuning changed from zero to value of obtained amplitude.
