RAILROAD CAR BUMPER

A rail car buffer (10) includes a tubular plunger (16) with a contact head (18) and a tubular base (14) with a base plate (26) over which the plunger (16) is slidable. A ring spring (30) in an interior chamber (24) of the buffer (10) biases the plunger (16) away from the base (14) and is collapsible...

description A rail car buffer (10) includes a tubular plunger (16) with a contact head (18) and a tubular base (14) with a base plate (26) over which the plunger (16) is slidable. A ring spring (30) in an interior chamber (24) of the buffer (10) biases the plunger (16) away from the base (14) and is collapsible in parallel with a hydraulic spring (28) comprising an outer cylinder (40) and an inner pressure cylinder (42) therein having flow control apertures (68) in its wall and a return flow aperture (70) adjacent the base plate (26). During buffer collapse, a piston (44) connected to the head (18) by a piston rod (52) forces fluid in the pressure cylinder (42) through the flow control apertures (68) into an annular reservoir (64) between the cylinders (40, 42) and through return apertures (66) into a chamber in front of the piston (44). An air pocket in the reservoir (64) becomes compressed as this occurs.
