description 1482684 Discharging molten glass ERSTE DEUTSCHE FLOATGLAS GmbH & CO OHG 13 Dec 1974 [17 Dec 1973] 53917/74 Heading C1M A method of obtaining a flow of homogenous molten glass from a melting tank comprises separating an intermediate layer of glass from the surface and bottom layers in the tank, supplying the glass of the intermediate layer to a processing station and returning the glass of the other layers to the body of the tank. In one embodiment vertical walls 7, 8 define a' vertical channel 9. The difference in height of the walls is equivalent to the depth of intermediate layer B which is directed down the channel 9. The surface layer A is returned to the tank by ducts 25, 26 in the side walls. In a second embodiment a horizontal outlet channel is located below the glass surface to remove the intermediate layer, the surface layer being encouraged to return to the tank along the side walls by coolers mounted in the roof. An existing tank can be modified by the use of an L-shaped block at the outlet for blocking off the surface layer.
