A device and a process for the manufacture of synthesis gas by combustion, with a deficiency of oxidising agent, of a hydrocarbon fuel using a gaseous oxidising agent, the device comprises primary injection means (2) producing along an axis (14) a jet of fuel and of a part of the oxidising agent in a combustion chamber of a reactor, the said jet comprising a main flame being generated substantially at the height of the primary injection means (2) and produced by the primary means. It is characterised in that it additionally comprises secondary means (6) for injection of a complement of oxidising agent, the said secondary injection means (6) being arranged across the said jet at a distance from the said primary injection means.
