There is provided a method for providing a substrate with an ablative coating using a one-part room temperature curable and sprayable ablative silicone composition which is thixotropic cures in depth within 24 hours to provide an ablative or thermal protective layer on an article. The one-part room temperature curable and sprayable ablative silicone composition is substantially free from diluents or solvents.
