description The present invention relates to a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar apparatus and a method for operating the same. The FMCW radar apparatus of the present invention comprises: a transmitting unit for transmitting signals including a chopping wave to a target object; a receiving unit for receiving reflective signals corresponding to the transmitting signals; a distance computing unit for extracting a peak value of the chopping wave in the reflective signal and computing a distance value between the target objects using a time difference between the extracted peak value and chopping wave peak value of the transmitting signal; a distance value computing unit for computing an increase distance value and a decrease distance value of radio frequency size difference between the chopping value of the transmitting signal and chopping wave of the reflective signal; and a relative speed computing unit for comparing the increase and decrease distance values computed by the distance value computing unit, determining a moving direction of the target object depending on the comparison result and computing the relative speed of the target object depending on the determined moving direction. According to the present invention, a moving direction of a target object which is not accurately measurable can be effectively computed using an FMCW method. Additionally, with the moving direction, relative speed and distance information can be provided for a user, so that the user can accurately predict the moving direction of surrounding objects while moving.
