description A method for preserving and restoring lozenge patterns of old books is provided to permanently rub a copy from the lozenge patterns of the old books by restoring the intaglio and relief lozenge patterns formed on a cover of the old book on clay and then baking and glazing the clay. The method for preserving and restoring lozenge patterns(11) of old books(170) comprises the steps of: stacking a base frame(120) as big as a cover of the old book after putting a cloth(130) on the upside of a plate frame(110), equally filling an opening space of the base frame with clay(150) by pressing, placing the cloth on the upside of the base frame, and then pressing the clay by an upper frame(140); carving the lozenge patterns on the upside of the clay by putting the inside of a cover of the old book engraved with lozenge patterns by intaglio and relief, on the upside of the clay and equally pressing the upper part of the cover; removing the base frame from the clay, drying the clay in the shade for a week, heating the clay at 300‹C for 6~7 hours, and then heating the clay at 850‹C for 6~7 hours and slowly cooling down the clay; applying a glaze on the front surface of a lozenge pattern plate and then repeatedly drying the lozenge pattern plate four or five times, wherein the glaze is formed by mixing alcohol of 92.5~93.5wt.%, abrasive materials of 0.1~0.5wt.%, carbon of 0.1~0.5wt.%, and shellac of 6.3~6.5wt.%; embossing the lozenge patterns by equally applying the glaze on the intaglio and relief lozenge patterns by rubbing coloring thermoplastic resin containing the black dye against the transparent thermoplastic resin of the lozenge pattern; and removing the coloring thermoplastic resin painted on the relief patterns by daubing the front surface of the lozenge pattern plate with urethane synthetic resin and compounds and preserving only the coloring thermoplastic resin applied on the intaglio patterns.
