According to an embodiment of the present invention, an apparatus for controlling a side viewer may comprise: the side viewer which is installed in a vehicle and is configured to take an image of the rear of the vehicle by rotating by a viewer driving unit; a lighting unit which adjusts the amount of light incident on the side viewer; at least one display device which outputs the image captured by the side viewer; a steering angle measuring unit which is configured to measure a steering angle according to a steering wheel operation of the vehicle; a direction sensing unit which detects the operation of a direction indicator of the vehicle; an illuminance sensing unit which determines the illuminance outside the vehicle; and a controller which calculates a viewer driving angle according to measurement results of the steering angle measuring unit and the direction sensing unit to control the viewer driving unit, and turns on/off the lighting unit according to the measurement result of the illuminance sensing unit. 일 실시예에 의하 사이드 뷰어 제어 장치는 차량에 설치되고, 뷰어 구동부에 의해 회전하여 차량 후방의 영상을 촬영하도록 구성된 사이드 뷰어, 사이드 뷰어로 입사되는 광량을 조절하는 조명부, 사이드 뷰어에서 촬영한 영상을 출력하는 적어도 하나의 디스플레이 장치, 차량의 핸들 조작에 따른 조향각을 측정하도록 구성되는 조향각 측정부, 차량의 방향 지시기 조작을 감지하는 방향 감지부, 차량 외부의 조도를 판단하는 조도 감지부 및, 조향각 측정부 및 방향 감지부의 측정 결과에 따라 뷰어 구동각을 산출하여 뷰어 구동부를 제어하고, 조도 감지부의 측정 결과에 따라 조명부를 온/오프하는 컨트롤러를 포함하도록 구성될 수 있다.
