CONSTITUTION:A substance selected from chlorhexidine hydrochloride expressed by formula I, chlorhexidine gluconate expressed by formula II and mixtures thereof as an active ingredient is added to a treatment apparatus for noxious waste water by an activated sludge method to prevent or eliminate occurrence of filamentous bulking in the waste water treatment apparatus. The above- mentioned substance is continuously or intermittently added 1-4 times a day preferably in an amount of 0.1-200mg/day expressed in terms of the active ingredient based on 1l air in an aeration tank of the waste water treatment apparatus. The method of use is simple and precipitating property of the used activated sludge can be observed and judged by naked eye. This method can be used under any condition and in any treating apparatus.
