PURPOSE:To enhance printing quality, by providing a printing-controlling means which so functions that when a specified code for effecting a carriage return is detected, the functional effect of a specified code preceding or following the specified code for the carriage return is inhibited. CONSTITUTION:After determining a text to be printed, key data are inputted through a keyboard, and a pointer P2 is set to a print pointer PP. when PP = TOBE (Text Open Buffer End), the data in the range from the pointer P2 to the pointer PP are printed. when PP not equal to TOBE, the sum of the count on a current carriage position counter ABS and a character space is set on a counter X. When the count on the counter X exceeds a hot zone HZ, the data at PP is read, and when it is a hyphen code, it is discriminated whether the data at the preceding address PP-1 is a required hyphen code. When the data at the preceding address is not the required hyphen code, the pointer PP is incremented (+1), and the data in the range from the pointer P2 to the pointer PP are printed. when the data at the preceding address is the required hyphen code, the data in the range from the pointer P2 to the pointer PP-1 are printed, the pointer PP is incremented (+1), and a carriage return operation is performed.
