Zusammenfassung:NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [R is lower alkyl, lower alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl which may have substituent group (e.g. halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, NO2, etc.) or heterocyclic group]. EXAMPLE:5-t-Butyl-2-methyl-3-furoyl-3'-isopropoxyanilide. USE:Herbicide exhibiting excellent herbicidal activity to the weeds such as cockspur-grass, monochoria, etc., and especially effective when applied to the paddy field just before or after the sprouting of weeds. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by (1) reacting chloropinacoline of formula II with ethyl acetoacetate of formula III in the presence of a base, (2) cyclizing the resultant compound of formula IV with a mineral acid to the compound of formula V, (3) converting the product to the corresponding acid halide of formula VI by hydrolysis and halogenation, and (4) reacting the halide with a primary amine of formula RNH2 optionally in the presence of a base.
