ON-LINE HANDWRITTEN CHARACTER RECOGNIZING SYSTEM

PURPOSE:To decrease greatly the character recognizing time and to improve the recognizing efficiency of the system by performing in two steps the matching operation between the input characters and a standard pattern. CONSTITUTION:The writing point coordinate series of input characters written on a data tablet 1 are fetched to a preprocessor 3 by means of an input pen 2. The processor 3 performs sampling to the data equivalent to a fetched character as well as the normalization of the position and the size of data. The data underwent said processing are fed to a feature extracting device 4 and a stroke number detecting device 5. The features of character patterns and the number of strokes extracted by devices 4 and 5 are applied to a pattern matching device 6. This device 6 is provided with an inter-stroke distance calculating device 61, a switch device 65, an accumulation/addition device 63, an intra- column minimum value selecting device 64 and inter-stroke distance memories 62a and 62b. The outputs of memories 62a and 62b are processed by minimum value selecting devices 8a and 8b and deciding device 10. Then the pattern matching processing is carried out in two steps. This decreases greatly the character recognizing time.
