description PURPOSE:To enable the extension of the life of plural cylindrical grinding bodies and the uniform and efficient finishing of a roll surface by pressing the circumferential surface of the grinding bodies to the roll while rotating said bodies and moving the grinding bodies in the axial direction of the roll. CONSTITUTION:The grinding bodies 10 which are kept rotated by rotational driving devices 11 at the peripheral speed lower than the peripheral rotating speed of the work roll 1 are pressed under proper force to the surface of the roll 1 by the operation of cylinders 8 while said roll 1 is rotated. A moving block 6 is moved back and forth in the axial direction of the roll (X direction in the figure) by a cross feed driving device 12 and the roll 1 surface is ground to a required profile by these bodies 10. The bodies 10 can be independently moved forward and backward in the direction perpendicular to the roll axis (Y direction in the figure) by the cylinders 8 specific to the respective grinding bodies and therefore on line roll grinding is executed by controlling individually the forward and backward movements of the bodies 10 according to the camber of the roll 1 so that the grinding bodies are adapted to the desired profile.
