description PURPOSE:To improve the liquid leakage resistance of a nonaqueous electrolyte battery without decreasing its electric discharge characteristic and heavy-load pulse characteristic by adding hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) to electrolyte prepared by dissolving a supporting electrolyte in an aprotic organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:A nonaqueous electrolyte battery contains a light metal such as Li, Nb or Mg used as a negative active material 3 and a metal, an oxide, a sulfide, a halide or a similar compound used as a positive active material 5. Nonaqueous electrolyte for this nonaqueous electrolyte battery is prepared by dissolving an ion-liberating salt used as a supporting electrolyte such as LiClO4, LiBF4, LiAsF6 or LiAlC4 in either an aprotic organic solvent such as propylene carbonate, gamma-butyrolactone, tetrahydrofuran, ethylene carbonate, acetonitrile or 1,2-dimethoxyethane or a mixture solvent consisting of one of the mixtures of the above organic solvents. In this battery, hydroxypropyl cellulose is added to the nonaqueous electrolyte to increase its viscosity thereby improving the liquid leakage resistance without increasing the internal resistance. Besides, the electrolyte is prevented from escaping outside the battery.
