An explosive 9 is pushed into the stave pipe 2 for supplying cooling water to the cooler 1 down to the intermediate part of the mounting surface of the shell 4 and the cooler 1, then the explosive is exploded by a fuse 17. The pipe 2 and the circumferential part 11 of a protective pipe 10 for said pipe are sharply cut by the explosion and at the same time, the cooler 1 is detached from the shell 4 by the impact pressure 13 of the explosion, by which the damaged cooler 1 is dropped by gravity into the blast furnace without damaging the shell 4.
