description PURPOSE:To prepare reformed coal equivalent to high coking coal and tar oil in good efficiency, by subjecting a mixture of low-grade coal and heavy hydrocarbon to heat treatment to obtain a heat-treated substance which is in turn further treated by using a light hydrocarbon solvent. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of one pt.wt. low-grade coal (e.g., a brown coal powder or a bituminous coal powder) and 1-10pts.wt. heavy hydrocarbon (e.g., coal tar or atmospheric distillation bottom oil of crude oil) is subjected to heat treatment at 300-500 deg.C. In the next step, one pt.wt. obtained heat-treated substance is mixed with 1-10pts.wt. light hydrocarbon solvent (a second solvent, e.g., naphtha or tung oil) and the obtained mixture is allowed to stand to effect phase separation. Subsequently, the upper layer is distilled to remove the second solvent and tar oil is taken out from the residual fraction while the lower layer is distilled to remove the second solvent and reformed coal is obtained from the residual fraction.
