PREPARATION OF RESOL TYPE PHENOLIC RESIN

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled composition having low formalin smell, by adding a specific amount of aniline to a reaction product of a phenolic compound with formaldehyde in its final reaction stage or after dehydration under reduced pressure. CONSTITUTION:A phenol is reacted with a drying oil (e.g., linseed oil, etc.) to give a phenolic compound modified by drying oil, which is reacted with formalin in the presence of an alkali catalyst under reflux. At a point of 5-10min before the beginning of dehydration under reduced pressure in the final stage of the reaction or at a point wherein a resin solution is obtained by adding a solvent to the reaction system after the dehydration under reduced pressure, aniline in an amount equimolar -1/20mol as that of the free formaldehyde of the reaction system or the resin solution so that the free formaldehyde is removed by the reaction with aniline, to give a resol type phenolic resin. EFFECT:The amount of the free formaldehyde is reduced by the addition of aniline, and anhydroformaldehyde with little smell is formed.
