USE:A colorless intermediate raw material for namatic liquid crystals, useful as electrooptical display materials and stable to moisture, air, light, etc. PROCESS:A compound expressed by formula II as a starting raw material is passed through steps 1-7 to give a 2-hydroxy-7-carboxy-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene expressed by formula (G). The OH group at the 2-position of the resultant compound is then acylated to afford the aimed compound expressed by formulaI.
