Textile sheet materials consisting wholly or partly of cellulose, natural polyamide or glass fibres are dyed and/or printed with disperse dyes by heat transfer or thermofixing following a pretreatment. The pretreatment is by impregnation with an aqueous liquor that contains a disperse dye solvent comprising a water-miscible organic cellulose-swelling agent with a boiling point of above 140 DEG C, a crosslinking agent comprising a reactant resin, and a disperse-dyeable high polymer that is fixable to the fibre materials mentioned, and subsequent drying. This pretreatment results in dyeings and prints having improved rub and/or wet fastness properties, a higher colour yield and improved handle, while the odour nuisance is minimal and application is simplified.
