description PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a mechanical parking device to automatically and accurately identify the kind of vehicle. SOLUTION: In an area 27 for identifying the kind of vehicle, a sensor box 30, in which a plurality of sensors are aligned parallel to the forward direction of a vehicle 28 at the height where only the wheels of the vehicle can be detected, is provided. The center position of each of the front wheels 29 of the vehicle is detected by the plurality of sensors. With the center position of each front wheel 29 as a reference, the front and rear ends of the vehicle 28 are detected respectively by front and rear end detecting devices 31, 32. The length of the vehicle 28 is determined as the sum of the length from the center of each front wheel 29 to the front end of the vehicle and the length from the center of each front wheel 29 to the rear end of the vehicle. In the area 27 for identifying the kind of vehicle, a height measuring device 33, a width measuring device 34, and a lowest above-ground height measuring device 35 are provided, and the kind of the vehicle 28 is identified through judgment on all the measurements made by the devices.
