CONSTITUTION: Waste water from phenol production, which is waste water discharged out at the time of producing phenols and containing tar basic groups and other organic substances besides phenols, is treated by activated sludge treatment. In that case, after an acid is added to the waste water from phenol production to adjust pH to be 4-5, the waste water is cleaned by utilizing light oil in which tar basic group concentration is kept to be 1000-10000ppm to lower the concentration of oil-soluble organic compounds and then the resulting waste waster is treated by activated sludge treatment. Consequently, without employing any special way, basic groups in the waste water which have strongly inhibiting function against the activated sludge can easily be removed. Moreover waste water from phenol production with stable basic group concentration can be supplied and thus stable operation of the activated sludge treatment can be expected.
