description PURPOSE:To obtain a carbonic acid ester useful as a synthetic raw material and a solvent for an aromatic polycarbonate and various kinds of chemicals by subjecting carbon monoxide and a nitrous acid ester to a gas phase catalytic reaction in the presence of a specific solid catalyst in high selectivity and yield. CONSTITUTION:Carbon monoxide and a nitrous acid ester is subjected to a gas phase catalytic reaction at 50-150 deg.C under a gage pressure of 0-10kg/cm in the presence of a solid catalyst carrying a platinum group metal ion (e.g. Pd-ion) on matalloalumino-silicate of faujasite-type. The catalyst can keep high activity for a long time while suppressing a side reaction at acid points on the catalyst. Further, the reaction proceeds without using hydrogen chloride in this system. Accordingly, the reaction apparatus is free from corrosion and contamination of chlorine component into a product is prevented.
