Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE: To provide an optical character reader which can perform precise recognition irrelevantly to the conveyance speed of a document. CONSTITUTION: This optical character reader is equipped with a CCD sensor 4 which receives reflected light from the document 20, a binarization circuit 5 which binarizes a signal based upon the reflected light, an image memory 6 which stores the binarized image data, a recognition part 7 which obtains its image data and recognizes a character, a speed control part 8 which controls the feed speed of the document 20 according to its kind, and an address control part 9 which controls the read address or read address of the image data from and to the image memory 6 according to the signal indicating the feed speed of the document 20 obtained from the speed control part 8.
