Under such a condition, the adsorbing capacity of the unburnt component adsorption means 8 is decided by a deciding means 15 depending on the detected values of an upstream side air-fuel ratio detecting means 12 to detect the air-ful ratio at the upstream side, and a downstream side air-fuel ratio detecting means 13 to detect the air-fuel ratio on the downstream side.
