description PURPOSE:To reduce black smoke discharged from a diesel engine under load or at the time of start, stop, etc., and reduce fuel consumption by adding methyl t-butyl ether, an oil-soluble organometallic compound, and dimethylpolysiloxane. CONSTITUTION:This fuel additive for reducing diesel engine soot comprises as active components (A) methyl t-butyl ether and (B) at least either of dimethylpolysiloxane (a) and at least one oil-soluble organic compound (b) with Fe, Cu, Ce, Ba, Ca, or Mn. The compound (b) is not particularly limited and is, e.g. an Fe salt of a naphthenic acid. The compound (a) is not particularly limited, but preferably has a viscosity of 200-5,000 cSt. The reducing method comprises adding the additive to a fuel to burn the additive-containing fuel, or introducing the additive into a burning atmosphere to burn the additive. The proportion of the ingredients (A) to (B) is preferably 30:70 to 70:30. The additive is added to a fuel in an amount of preferably 0.02-1%.
