The vibration of the strip at the side of the rolling apparatus is detects with a strip-displacement detector 24, which is provided at the side of the rolling mill. The periodicities of both detected values are analyzed with FFT analyzers 28. When the respective frequency components agree in the specified range and the amplitudes of the vibrations are the specified values or more as a result of the comparison in a comparator 30, a signal is outputted. An alarm is outputted from an alarm generator 32 based on the signal. Thus, the occurrence of a chatter mark caused by the winding device located at the output side of the rolling apparatus is foreseen, and the occurrence can be prevented.
