Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To provide an antiviral agent produced by using a steam distillation liquid of Houttuynia cordata as an active component. CONSTITUTION:Whole grass of Houttuynia cordata is collected and subjected to steam distillation in undried state. The obtained steam distillation liquid containing the essential oil component is used as an active component. The steam distillation liquid contains at least one of n-decylaldehyde, n- dodecylaldehyde and methyl n-nonyl ketone as an essential oil component. The agent exhibits remarkable antiviral action against influenza virus, type-1 herpes simplex virus and AIDS virus. The steam distillation liquid is free from cytotoxicity, has fragrant odor and is usable as it is as pharmaceuticals. Contrary, characteristic smell is generated by the single use of n-dodecylaldehyde, n-decylaldehyde and methyl n-nonyl ketone.
