description PURPOSE:To prevent a composite superconductor from having its superconducting characteristics deteriorated by a lateral compressive force. CONSTITUTION:A composite superconductor 10 has a structure in which copper housings 1, 2 each having a dented cross section are arranged opposite to each other with a superconducting wire 3 of a rectangular cross section enclosed therein and integrally secured to the copper housings using a low melting-point metal 4, and a cylindrical member 13 made of a nonmagnetic material such as stainless and copper is disposed between the superconducting wire and the inner surface 12 of each of the two copper housings opposite to the wire, including the end portion 11 of the bonding surface 11 of each housing. When the superconductor is acted upon by a compressive force in X-direction as a result of electromagnetic force, the cylindrical member is deformed and reduces the stress on the superconductor, thereby preventing deterioration of superconducting characteristics.
