Reflected light is captured by a television camera and an image is detected. Detected image signal is introduced to a signal processing system where the shape of the slit image is extracted from the image signal and converted into fine lines. Longitudinal interval of the slit image subjected to fine line conversion is then compared with a standard value. If the difference exceeds a predetermined value, a decision is made that some strand has broken and the result is recorded. The inspection is carried out over the entire circumference of transmission line.
