description PURPOSE:To effectively prevent old information from being mixed in new information as a noise at the time of digital recording in a magnetic layer film surface through the use of residual magnetization in the longitudinal direction. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic head 12 arranged opposing to the magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium 11 is provided with a recording reproduction head 14 and an erasing head 15. The respective heads 14 and 15 are arranged at a position where the erasing head 15 precedes the recording reproduction head 14 in the magnetic recording medium 11, that is, arranged to be positioned at the rear side of the magnetic reproduction head 14 in the rotary direction of the magnetic recording medium 11. By this head arrangement, the magnetic layer of the magnetic recording medium 11 is removed ahead of recording by the recording head 14 by the erasing head 15 to which A.C. erasing current is supplied to the rotary direction of the magnetic recording medium 11 by preceding the recording head 14 so that sufficient recording can be executed.
