description PURPOSE:To obtain a starch foam excellent in biodegradability by heating a starchy material in the presence of an acid catalyst and a polyhydric alcohol, and foaming and hardening the obtained liquid material. CONSTITUTION:A starchy material is heated at 30-200 deg.C in the presence of an acid catalyst and a polyhydric alcohol (polyol) to liquefy the material. The obtained liquid material is then foamed and hardened to give an objective foam. As the starchy material serving as the starting raw material, a wide variety of common starches such as corn starch, potato starch, tapioca starch and wheat starch are used. Modified starches obtained therefrom are also used; an esterified or etherified starch preferably having a degree of substitution of 0.01 to 0.5 is used while other cross-linked starches can also be used. This foam has wide application; for example, it can realize even the foaming while bonding to wood or paper to thereby give a product generally having high peel strength.
