The compound of the formula can provide flexibility, water resistance and hydrophobic properties to an epoxy resin and an polyester resin. The alcohol is exemplified by stearyl alcohol, lauryl alcohol, etc., and is used in an amount of 1-4 times by weight based on butanetetracarboxylic acid.
