description | PURPOSE:To obtain a new nonoptical active liquid crystal compound having small reduction in the tilt angle of a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition even by adding the compound to the ferroelectric liquid crystal composition in order to improve response of electric field in production of the ferroelectric liquid crystal composition. CONSTITUTION:A nonoptical active liquid crystal compound of formula I (R is 4-20C alkyl; R5 is branched fluoroalkyl; X, Y and Z are single bond, COO, OCO or O; (m) is 4-20) containing fluoroalkyl group at molecular end such as compound of formula II. The compound is blended with at least one of an optically active compound, a smectic liquid crystal compound and a two-color coloring matter to prepare a liquid crystal composition useful for liquid crystal element having excellent response of electric field and contrast. A cholesteric liquid crystal compound, a ferroelectric liquid crystal compound, an antierroelectric liquid crystal compound, etc., may be cited as the optically active compound. One of the compounds of formula I is obtained through a process shown by the reaction formula. |
