Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE: To eliminate the need for an initializing magnetic field and to lessen the restriction on the material compsn. of a medium in direct overwritable magneto-optical recording using multilayered films. CONSTITUTION: The medium formed by directly laminating two exchange bondable rare earth-transition metal alloy layers (memory layer and auxiliary layer) satisfying the requirements that Curie points be nearly equal and that either one layer is rich with the rare earths and has no compensation point or laminating both layers via an intermediate layer interposed therebetween to the exchange bondable extent is used. Prior to the execution of recording, the auxiliary layer is previously magnetized in one direction. The recording of one of binary data is executed by irradiating the medium with energy pulses from the side of the memory layer to the extent of preventing the auxiliary layer from attaining the Curie point and the recording of the other by irradiating the medium with the energy pulses to the extent of allowing the auxiliary layer as well to attain the Curie point.
