REMOVAL OF BUTYL GROUP FROM TETRABUTYL BIPHENOL
PURPOSE:To remove butyl from 3,3',5,5'-tetra-t-butyl-4,4'-biphenol by debutylating the 3,3',5,5'-tetra-t-butyl-4,4'-biphenol in the presence in a solvent consisting of a phenol and subsequently adding phenol, etc., to a bottom solution to transalkylate the unreacted t-b...

description | PURPOSE:To remove butyl from 3,3',5,5'-tetra-t-butyl-4,4'-biphenol by debutylating the 3,3',5,5'-tetra-t-butyl-4,4'-biphenol in the presence in a solvent consisting of a phenol and subsequently adding phenol, etc., to a bottom solution to transalkylate the unreacted t-butyl groups to the phenol. CONSTITUTION:In the first process, 3,3',5,5'-tetra-t-butyl-4,4'-biphenol(TBBP) is debutylated in the presence of a debutylation catalyst (e.g. p-toluene sulfonic acid) in a solvent consisting of phenol at 150-220 deg.C to prepare isobutylene gas and a bottom solution. In the second process, new phenol or cresol is added to the bottom solution and the unreacted butyl groups are transbutylated to the phenol or cresol to remove the butyl groups from the TBBP at 180-200 deg.C. The above-mentioned method does not require any drastic condition, permits the effective utilization and re-utilization of the recovered isobutylene and phenols and is simple and economical. |
