PURPOSE:To enhance the uniform liquid retaining property in the height direction by using a band-shaped glass fiber separator having a specified ratio of the tensile strength in the longitudinal direction to that in the direction across the width. CONSTITUTION:A separator made of band-shaped glass fiber, in which the ratio of the tensile strength TL in the longitudinal direction to that in the direction across the width TW meets the condition as expressed by Eq. I, is installed between a positive and a negative electrode plate in such an arrangement that its longitudinal is identical to the height direction of the electrode plates. This use of separator, which ensures uniform retaining property for the liquid such as sulfuric acid, etc., even in the height direction, provides a sealed type lead storage battery with long life, even in case the battery is constructed in a larger size.
