PURPOSE:To always attain the desired control of exposure by correcting exposure according to an appropriate exposure condition computed based on a signal outputted from an image pickup element after performing provisional exposure to the image pickup element, and inhibiting the correction of exposure by means of the provisional exposure in the case where the exposure is manually set. CONSTITUTION:An arithmetic means 2 is provided, which computes the appropriate exposure condition based on the signal outputted from the image pickup element 1 after performing the provisional exposure to the image pickup element 1. Moreover, a correction means 3 for correcting the exposure according to the computed condition and a correction inhibiting means 4 for inhibiting the correction of exposure by means of the provisional exposure in the case where the exposure is manually set are also provided. Thus, erroneous correction caused by inverse correction, etc., can be prevented and the desired appropriate control of exposure where photographer's intention is established can be always performed.
