Zusammenfassung:To reduce NOx emissions during shift transition between a fuel lean combustion mode and a combustion mode with a theoretical air-fuel ratio.SOLUTION: A control device for an engine includes: an intake amount adjustment section (throttle valve 43) for adjusting intake amount to be supplied to a combustion chamber 17; an ECU 10 enabling switching between a fuel lean first combustion mode and a stoichiometric second combustion mode on the basis of an operating state of the engine 1; and an intake air cooling section (air conditioner 8) cooling intake air to be supplied to the combustion chamber 17. The ECU 10 controls the intake air cooling section so as to start cooling of intake air when receiving issuance of a request for switching between the first combustion mode and the second combustion mode, controls the intake amount adjustment section so as to start switching between the first combustion mode and the second combustion mode after the intake air cooling section starts cooling of intake air, and controls the intake air cooling section and the intake amount adjustment section so as to finish switching between the first combustion mode and the second combustion mode after the cooling of intake air by the intake air cooling section is finished.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 9A 【課題】燃料リーンな燃焼モードと理論空燃比での燃焼モードとの間の移行過渡時に、NOx排出量を低減する。【解決手段】エンジンの制御装置は、燃焼室17に供給される吸気量を調整する吸気量調整部(スロットルバルブ43)と、燃料リーンな第1燃焼モード及びストイキな第2燃焼モードをエンジン1の運転状態に基づいて切替可能なECU10と、燃焼室17に供給される吸気を冷却する吸気冷却部(エアコン8)とを備える。ECU10は、第1燃焼モードと第2燃焼モードとの間の切替要求が出されたことを受けて、吸気の冷却を開始するように吸気冷却部を制御し、吸気冷却部が吸気の冷却を開始した後に、第1燃焼モードと第2燃焼モードとの間の切替を開始するように吸気量調整部を制御し、吸気冷却部による吸気の冷却が終了した後に第1燃焼モードと第2燃焼モードとの間の切替を終了するように、吸気冷却部及び吸気量調整部を制御する。【選択図】図9A
