Intake air trapped in the closed space is recirculated as recirculation air, and fuel is injected into the recirculation air to make the air fuel-rich. Then, the exhaust shutter 13 is opened, and the EGR valve 16 is closed, so as to discharge the recirculation air in the closed space to the exhaust side and supply the recirculation air to the NOx occlusion catalyst 14.
