description PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce thermal stress concentrated on a cylinder of an engine by preventing the occurrence of cooling/heating cycle due to the repetition of high load operation and low load operation in an air-cooled engine.SOLUTION: A device for controlling an engine has: a high temperature determination part 58 for determining a high temperature region in which an engine speed Ne is equal to or above a speed high temperature threshold value NeH and a throttle opening Th is equal to or above a throttle high temperature threshold value ThH; and a low temperature determination part 59 for determining a low temperature region in which the engine speed Ne is equal to or below a speed low temperature threshold value NeL, which is set to be equal to or below the speed high temperature threshold value NeH, and a throttle opening Th is below the throttle high temperature threshold value ThH. A cooling/heating cycle determination part 60 is provided for determining the occurrence of cooling/heating cycle when the high temperature region and the low temperature region are alternately repeated based on the engine speed Ne and the throttle opening Th. When it is determined that the cooling/heating cycle occurs, an adjusting part 61 is provided to carrying out the increase of the fuel injection amount and adjustment of the retardation of the ignition timing.
