Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a neural probe system used for exciting neurons and/or acquiring data.SOLUTION: At least one planar microelectrode (2) is attached to a carrier (7), and comprises a set of two or more conductive segments (1). The set is preferably confined to be in an area of from 15 to 8,000 μm, and electrical connections (4, 5) assuring that at least two sub-sets of conductive segments (1) within the set are individually switchable to the same input or output line (3) so that the surface area and/or the shape of the microelectrode (2) electrically connected to the line (3) can be varied.
