description PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piping tomograph which can nondestructively inspect a large caliber pipe on site and a method of controlling the same. SOLUTION: A piping inspection device body 100 includes a support device 3 for opposing a radiation source 1 and a secondary radiation detector 2 to each other; an axial drive mechanism 19; and lateral drive mechanisms 17 and 18 for translational moving the radiation source 1 and the secondary radiation detector 2 along a pipe in the longitudinal direction via the support device 3. The distance of translational scanning by the axial drive mechanism 19 and the maximum lateral distance of movement of the translational movement of the lateral drive mechanisms 17 and 18 are set at a control console 23. The interval of the translational movement along the pipe in the longitudinal direction by the lateral drive mechanisms 17 and 18 is determined on the basis of the width of the secondary radiation detector 2 along the pipe in the longitudinal direction; the distance between the radiation source 1 and the secondary radiation detector 2; and a prescribed distance between the radiation source 1 and the surface of the pipe 15 on the side of the radiation source 1.
