description | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cylinder discrimination device for an internal combustion engine accurately executing cylinder discrimination on top of minimizing operation response of variable valve timing during normal operation and accurately executing cylinder discrimination and angle control when at least a cam sensor of one bank is normal even if another cam sensor and a crank sensor fail in the internal combustion engine having two banks. SOLUTION: This device includes a crank angle sensor generating crank signal according to rotation of the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine, a first cam sensor generating first phase signal according to rotation of a camshaft of the first bank, a second cam sensor generating second phase signal according to rotation of a camshaft of the second bank, and a normal operation cylinder discrimination means. The first phase signal and the second phase signal comprise different number of signals per 180 degrees of the crankshaft respectively, and the normal operation cylinder discrimination means executes cylinder discrimination based on number of phase signals of the two banks between predetermined crank angles determined by signal of the crank angle sensor.
